Don't Be A Hater!
Okay, so I haven’t ranted in a while. So you guys are in for an earful!
This morning, I’m listening to the radio and I hear that Mandisa got voted off of “American Idol” this week, which was a shock. And then I hear the reason why, and it’s an even bigger shock!
Apparently, she was being interviewed by “The Advocate” and she made some very ignorant comments, which I will sum up for you: She is religious, and therefore doesn’t believe in homosexuality and would not feel comfortable performing at a gay venue.
WOW
WOW
WOW
Well, I haven’t been watching “AI” this season, but I can guarantee you she wouldn’t have gotten my votes either!!
Anywho, the DJ made a comment about how Mandisa is a “Hater” and a “Hypocrite.” Apparently, Mandisa has been upset this season because she is heavy and Simon has been picking on her about her weight. And the DJ was saying that she is a hypocrite because she is upset about being discriminated against WHILE SHE IS DISCRIMINATING AGAINST OTHERS. I thought the DJ’s point was well-made and right on.
Of course, this sparked an onslaught of phone calls. And there was this one ignoramus, in particular, who was spouting off about how we have to give witness to these people and that the Bible forbids it and blah blah blah.
You know, this just really sticks in my craw. I love how these ultra-religious freaks go around quoting the Bible whilst condemning and persecuting others. Is that really what God wants us to do? Does he really want us to be this way?? It’s not our place to judge others.
Besides, the Bible was written how many years ago? Sure it references not laying down with another man but what about “an eye for an eye”? Does that still apply? How about sacrificing our children? We still allowed to do that? And we’re not supposed to work on Sunday, so does that mean that everyone who works at the mall on Sunday is going to hell? COME ON, PEOPLE. Give me a freaking break. The times have changed, you morons!
Then this other douche bag calls in and says that he’s very religious and that Mandisa didn’t say she hated gays. She said she didn’t feel comfortable around them and that just makes her honest.
Well, you know what? Hitler was honest when he said he hated the Jews. And murdred them because they weren’t white. And the KKK was honest when they said they hated Blacks and subsequently killed them. And I’m being honest when I say I hate these phuckers who go off half-cocked with their Praise-Jesus talk, and act the LEAST CHRISTIAN of any of us. After all, the Golden Rule is “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Treat others how you want to be treated.
I’m Catholic. Grew up going to Catholic grade school, high school, and even college. Church on Sundays and everything. And you know what? I don’t hate gay people. I LOVE THEM. I don’t know; perhaps I’m a little too close to the issue. I mean, I was “Grace Adler” before “Will & Grace” ever came on the air. I dated my Michael in high school. He came out in college. We lived together for 5 years. We are still best friends. He was in my wedding party. I was in his. He is my son’s Godfather, for crying out loud!
Shit, when I was in college, every time I turned around someone was coming out to me. I wore my title, “Fag Hag,” with great pride. Frankly, I could have started my own religion; I had such a huge following (LoLo Ron Hubbard???). The point is that everyone knew I was okay with it and that I embraced it. And I let them know that I was comfortable with it and that they could come to me. Because they were my friend before they came out. And they would be my friend after.
And to this day, I still have lots of gay friends.
And Black friends.
And Jewish friends.
And Arabic friends.
And skinny friends.
And fat friends.
And old friends.
And young friends.
And they were all born the way they are. And I love them all.
I am so tired of this fight!! It’s so ridiculous. I am so tired FOR everyone out there who has been persecuted, victimized, wronged, mistreated, and hurt BECAUSE THEY ARE WHO THEY ARE. I am so tired of ignorant people, afraid of others being different so they hate the others. It is just wrong. And I’m tired of it! It’s too bad open
We’re all different. That’s what makes the world interesting. Some of us are religious and some of us are not. Some of us are men, some women. Some of us like men, some like women. Some of us are white, some black, and all other beautiful shades of the rainbow of the races in this world. Together we paint the earth with gorgeous and vivid colors.
Why can’t we all embrace that? Why can’t we love our differences? And why can’t we all just get along?

Right on, Sister! You make so many valid points and I completely agree with you! Rant away, we've missed it!
Thanks Momma! I was sooo fired up this morning. I wanted to call in to the radio station, but sometimes when I get that upset, I incoherantly babble. And I certainly I didn't want to call up and sound like a doodie head :)
I note that you did not mention your love of red headed people. I feel slighted.
Well said LoLo...
First time to your blog and I have to repectfully disagree with you.
She is absolutely right to "not feel comfortable performing at a gay venue" if she thinks that homosexuality is morally wrong. You wouldn't expect to see Bruce Springsteen performing at a fundraiser for President Bush, would you? So why is it wrong that she has different convictions and beliefs and that she walks out? If anything, she is not selling out her beliefs for fame and should be commended for doing so.
Furthermore, it is possible to love someone and and not approve of their lifestyle or even like who they are very much. I have a friend that had a bad alcohol problem when he was younger. It got bad, and we stopped hanging out with him, though we never stopped loving him. We kept in touch and let him know that we were there for him, but we didn't want him in our homes, and we didn't feel right going out for a beer with him. We didn't legitimize his problem by partying with him. That would be hypocritical. He hit rock bottom, and we were there to pick him up because we love him.
I agree with you 100%!
I also don't understand the "reverse discrimination". ie. Anyone can be in the Miss America Pageant, but then there's a Miss Black America pageant for just blacks. Why? I just don't get it!
Mel, oh I HATE red heads!
Casperelli: Thanks :)
Sue Z Q: Thank you
I know I've said it before...but, Your The Shit lolo!
I read a short story on that homophobe freak this morning and felt pretty fired up myself.
At least we have the satisfaction to know the she fucked herself out of a singing career...unless she goes on the road with Billy Graham or gets a bit on the 700 club.
You Go Girl! I can understand and respect that others don't share my views, and I guess you hafta give the girl some respect for sticking up for what she "believes," but what you're more or less ranting about is not that she disagrees with you, but that she puts the "Christian" title to her beliefs.
All I can figure is that we can only do our "Personal Best" in every aspect of our lives. And, hopefully instill in our children (and posibble influence others) to make "Good Decisions" in their own lives.
Too often, people just choose the "Path of Least Resistance" and just accept things because they're "more acceptable" or "easier" and label it with "My Religion Says," or "My Parents Made me This Way," or whatever, and, that just sucks!
Molly - you are awesome! And thank you! Billy Graham. I can't stop laughing :)
Celina - thanks! You're right - it is the "Christian" thing that really pisses me off. It is just not a Christian thing to do! It is not our job to judge people - that's for God to do.
This reminds me of an episode of "Designing Women" when some ignorant woman made a comment about how God was punishing gays with AIDS. And Julia said, "If God were punishing people with venereal diseases based on our sins, you'd be first in line every week at the free clinic."
It also brings to mind something about glass houses and stones... :)
I think that our disagreement stems from the belief that you and others hold that homosexuals are born that way. I don't believe that, and neither does she. I believe that it is a learned lifestyle, a choice. It is not one that you are born posessing. We'll just agree to disagree on that one.
I also disagree with you on your other point regarding all-Jewish, all-black or all-mentally retarted venue. She does not want to entertain people in a venue that is full of people she believes are living a morally bankrupt lifestyle. Most people would not argue that being Jewish, black or retarded would constitute any absence of morality, so I think that we are arguing apples and oranges here. Again, we'll agree to disagree.
Lastly, we did love my buddy when he was destroying his life with alcohol, but we weren't going to be part of it. She can still have love in her heart for homosexuals, but choose not to perform in those venues.
I'll try not to be so argumentative in the future.
Finally, much love to the carnies.
Flounder, Flounder, Flounder...
You need to look at the lastest research involving genes and homosexuality. There is a link there, Dude. Trust me.
My friends who are gay say that they can remember having sexual feelings towards men when they were little boys. It's something they felt from the beginning. They didn't sit and stare at naked pictures of guys and FORCE themselves to be gay. THEY JUST ARE.
Also, I take great offense to the term "morally bankrupt" being used to refer to homosexuals. My wonderful friend Michael is married to a wonderful man. (They were legally married in Canada, by the way). They have a happy, loving, monogamous relationship. They go to Church, they have good jobs, they have a nice home, and they are the most welcoming people you could ever meet.
As a straight person, you can go into any gay bar in the world and be welcomed with open arms. The same can't be said about gay people going into straight bars. And that is not right!
I sincerely doubt that Mandisa has any (as you say) "love in her heart" for homosexuals, as she clearly states she believes "they" are against her religion. Whatever. Bitches are against mine.
I also would like to state, just for the records, that I have found in my lifetime, that the people who protest the most about homosexuals are, in fact, HOMOSEXUALS THEMSELVES.
"Me thinks thou doth proset too much!"
And you, Sir, are on double-secret probation.
Flounder knows my readers are liberals. He is, obviously, a conservative.
But I love Flounder because he gives his point of view without being hateful, and he doesn't let differences stand in the way of being friends.
So, I've said it before, Flounder, no matter how many times I disagree with you, I salute you.
amen, lolo...ignorance will be the death of the human race.
my hubby was telling me today that his dad would freak out & want to clean the bathrooms when his sister would bring home a gay friend, fearing that he'd get AIDS.
we can all choose who we want to hang out with. generally, people that live like JESUS would, are open to hanging out with anyone (if your readers, one in particular, might recall that jesus hung out with prostitutes and lepers in his day). hypocritical "christians" that chastize those that are different than they are, often times wind up hanging out with fuckers just like them...UNTIL they disagree on something...they always seem to disagree with the "like minded" enough and eventually wind up ALONE.
people also tend to forget that the hebrew and greek texts of the bible have been rewritten and rewritten many times over to suit the times. much of the actual meaning of the original text was also written to suit the time in which it was written. the bible also states that women who are mensturating should be kept away from others for a specific amount of time, and includes breaking pots (i don't have the actual text in front of me, but it's almost comical). the bible also tells people to keep SLAVES (this is in the new testament in peter). there is a lot in the bible that is not pertinant to today...and it was also written by human beings who had their own feelings about things, even if god was "telling" them to write what they wrote. if anyone feels the need to argue this with me...go for it, mofos!
ok...i think i am done with my rant. :) you rule lolo!
Ubie, I will agree that Flounder is a conservative. And I am liberal.
Rollerskater, thank you very much! I absolutely agree with you 100%!!! Well said :)
I'd like to make a couple of final comments on this subject. First, I do not know what is in Mandisa's heart, but I understand her reasoning for not wanting to perform in a gay venue, and I respect her decision. It will cost her professionally, but she seems prepared to deal with that.
Second, sorry for the morally bankrupt comment. I wasn't quite sure how to say that she found an issue with morality in their lifestyle, and I chose my words poorly.
Next, I commend a church that welcomes homosexuals to attend. Christ did hang out with the sinners and other outcasts, and that is appropriate.
(I'm not even going to go off on a tangent about gay marriage. I am sure that will be a point of contention as well.)
My last comment is on the Bible itself. If you believe that the Bible is the divinely inspired work of God, then you must believe that he can keep it in the context in which he would like it kept. In other words, I don't buy that it is not the same as it was originally written just because it was written by hand and passed down for hundreds of years. If God inspired its writing, then he can certainly keep it the way it was written.
Finally, did you just call me gay? I mean, moi? You, my dear Lolo, are the one on double secret probation.
BTW - Don't go to my blog today if you don't want to read a John Kerry bashing. Just saying.
flounder-the bible hasn't been kept in it's original form throughout the years, hence the many, many translations~from the king james that was written for the time of the king and extremely hard to understand, to modern day translations that completely dumb the bible down, to the p.c. new revised standard...ALL have been interpreted differently, as you can see by reading just one verse from each version.
Have I told you lately that I love you? Cause I really fucking love you.
I had no idea about Mandisa. I don't feel so bad about her being voted off now, and I was totally for her all the way.
go lolo!
I find that ultra-conservative Christians (in my experience being surrounded by southern baptists for 5 years) forget that they aren't in fact god.
They don't get to make decisions about who is going where in the afterlife.
This girl could play shows at straight venues with a plethora of sinners from drinkers to child molesters but somehow she would feel more comfortable because they are capable of loving a person of the opposite sex?
I don't for a second believe that homosexuals are born that way, the logic of it all is ridiculous. Why would someone wake up one morning and decide, "gee, you know what I want to do? I want to join a minority group where I can be refused employment, be beaten to a pulp in the streets and be shunned by my government and family, all because I want to LOVE someone they don't approve of."
Yea, that would make TONS of sense.
That girl on AI have every right to her opinon, but she is made a really poor choice as to when to voice it. I'm surprised that she got voted off for that, but hopefully it's a sign of change.
Lolo: I am completely behind you on this one. I myself am tired of trying to understand why prejudice continues. I posted the other day about my more and more racist father's outlook on biracial dating. I just don't get why people continue to tear themselves apart. But then I read posts from people such as yourself, with as much empathy as I hope I have, and I feel reassured(though I am decidedly cynical and even misanthropic if pushed to the limit. I see it as the result of frustration with it all). Keep up the fight, Lolo.
I am so offended that you hate us red heads. Whatever.
Now, onto the more important issue at hand. I think what everyone is forgetting is that no one has the right, privilege or omnipotence to judge anyone. ANYONE. I'm not threatening you all with my Father, but my Father will kick all your butts when it comes to Bible knowledge and who is right and who is wrong. I should mention that my Father is God, a.k.a. Jesus and he preached love and understanding. He hung out with whores and lepers. I'm pretty sure he'd be totally cool with hanging out with a mo, or a red head for that matter. I'm not trying to trivialize this post. This is important stuff. Just as important as Lo Lo said in one of her retorts about someone not wanting to play to all Jewish or all Black crowds and that causing an uprising amongst us. Flounder - I think you must admit that probably Hitler and the KKK would feel justified in making those statements, yet you just said that is totally different and wouldn't happen. Really? Didn't Hitler think that the Jews were nothing and/or morally bankrupt?
Perhaps we should explore that further. Hitler wanted to rid the world of all Jews. Actually, he wanted to rid the world of anyone not Aryan, whatever that really is. My point being why aren't you defending his view point? Why aren't you pointing out how he was just following his moral beliefs? Probably because we can all get behind the Jews and all get against Hitler and his desire to commit genocide, which I think we can ALL agree is still happening. But thank God we are staying out of that, eh? (much sarcasm there.)
I'm a little off topic here. Not trying to say that Flounder would consider backing Hitler, just pointing out that hate breeds hate, and no matter how it is said, her comments are hateful.
I have a ton more facts and stuff, but I'm sure I've given you enough material to destroy for one day. The fact remains that a true Christian acts with love and decency and does not judge, but leaves that to the only entity that actually has the ability to unconditionally judge, and love.
Mel, why on earth would I defend Hitler? His actions of trying to exterminate an entire race were deplorable, even if they were in line with his moral beliefs. But Mandisa isn't trying to kill anyone. All she said is that she wouldn't want to perform in a gay club.
And no one is talking about hate. She was asked a question by an agenda-driven publication and answered honestly. She never said that she hated homosexuals, or that she wanted them removed from the planet. She just said that she wouldn't sing for them.
Please go to my blog and read my post to continue this discussion. Or don't. I won't consider any of you haters if you don't.
RollerSkater: Thank you for your comments. You are correct about the Bible revisions. I actually just heard that they found a gospel according to Judas and they have authenticated it. In this newest version, Judas claims that Jesus ASKED him to betray Him. So that challenges all of our beliefs up until this point. And, as it has already been pointed out, these are HUMANS reporting the facts. They are biased and put their own spin on things too. Just read Matthew, Mark, Luke AND John to find different versions of the SAME STORY!
Brookie, thanks Babe! Love you, too!!
Kitty - Thank you! I often wonder how Bible Thumpers can fall in love with men on Death Row who have murdered several people and feel that these murders can be saved, but homosexuals be-damned. It's riduculous. Especially when all the mos are doing is loving a person of the same sex.
Rev, welcome to my blog! And thank you for your comments and joining me in the fight!!
Mel - You're alright... for a red head :) GOOD STUFF!
And Flounder - You are outnumbered. You may be able to sway Fawn Lebowitz, but you ain't chaning any minds over here!! Me and my peeps loves us some Mos and there is nothing you can say that will ever make us think differently!
Did you really just hit me with a Fawn Lebowitz reference?
(Although she was the one that died in the kiln explosion, you still get big points for effort.)
And before you go and google the "other" girls name, it's Shelly Dubinsky and her three friends were Brunella, Beth and Noreen.
And for the record, Flounder's girl was Sissy, and I am pretty sure that Otter boinked her.
Yes, I am a fountain of useless information.
Otter didn't boink Sissy. Although Otter was hot and coulda boinked me!
OTIS, MY MAN!
Melly, I respect that people stand up for their beliefs; but it's just irritating when they are closed-minded, racist, homophobic, unChristian beliefs.
Flounder, you want to talk about the context of the Bible in today's world? Okay - check this out:
Letter to George Bush - from unknown devout Christian
Dear President Bush,
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's law. I have learned a great deal from you and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them:
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not to Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states that he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that, even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there "degrees" of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev. 24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws (Lev. 20:14)?
I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help.
Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lastly, Flounder, regarding your "Animal House" knowledge - it seems like you have way too much time on your hands, Dude.
Yes, I did have too much time on my hands when I was younger and watched that damn movie at least 200 times. And don't even get me started on the Blues Brothers. Some things like that movie just stick in my head. Other things, like my wife's birthday, I seem to forget.
As for the Bible, every scripture that the letter listed identifies laws of the Old Covenant from the Old Testament.
Christians follow the New Covenant from the New Testament. Without going into too much theology, it is what Christ was sent here for. Though there is wisdom to found in the Old Testament, we live our lives in accordance with the law of the New Testament.
Unless you are Jewish and then you still follow the old law. But that is a completely different argument.
30nth
I think Lo Lo and Flounder should settle this arguement with some mud wrestling!
Flounder, first you say you hate gays, and now Jews??? Oh my GOD! Just kiddin. If you read my blog, you would see that I am Catholic.
Oh, and forgetting your wife's birthday - you are damned to Hell for sure!
Melanie, I think that Flounder and I will be taking this outside. I also think you should get the dirt and mud ready, and start mixin!
And don't forget that I hate them blacks too. (How's that for shock and awe, even if I am only kidding?)
I'm always up for a little mud wrestling. But please don't hurt me too bad. I bruise easily.
